This page will give you an idea of the steps involved during construction. Keep in mind each project will vary, this is just a general overview.
On exterior residential concrete projects, we follow the standards established by the South Suburban Task Force on Exterior Residential Concrete.

"There are no shortcuts to a good job."
-Sal Catalano, Owner
Existing material is removed and hauled away. Temporally forms are erected around the perimeter. A gravel sub base is installed and compacted. The grade of the sub base must have an even thickness to ensure the slab will have the same thickness throughout. The grading must also have enough pitch for proper drainage. Finally, steel wire mesh reinforcement is cut to fit and laid on base. The wire will be placed in the middle of the slab during the pour. At this point the site is ready for municipality inspection.

Step 2. Pouring & Finishing
Wet concrete is poured in place and leveled off. Concrete is then bull-floated and left alone until all the water on top of the concrete has evaporated –this is to prevent water from getting trapped which can create a weak surface. Joints are cut with a hand groover to prevent unsightly random cracks. The entire area is now hand finished by floating and brooming the surface - a steel trowel is used on interior slabs only. Finishing will also vary depending on the application and preference. Twenty-four hours later, the forms are removed and the site is cleaned. The surface is now ready for light foot traffic; however, a minimum of seven days of curing is required before it can be driven on. We recommend that homeowners apply a concrete sealer to prevent staining, and damage caused by deicers. Also, keeping the concrete wet for seven days after it has harden will help it cure better and give you a stronger, better looking product.
Brick Paving:
Step 1. Site Preparation
Existing material is removed and hauled away. Crushed stone is added and compacted in lifts (every 2 inchs) to form a solid sub base. Thickness of sub base will depend on existing soil conditions and application. A one inch layer of sand is added on top of the sub base to create a bed for the pavers to set in.
Step 2. Paver Installation
The pavers are installed according to the desired pattern. The outer border (soldier course) is then installed and all necessary cuts are made. After all the pavers are laid the edging is installed to hold everything together.
Step 3. Setting & Locking the Pavers
Course sand is spread on top of the paved surface and swept into all of the joints. A compactor is then used over the pavers to settle the sand and to set the pavers into the base. ![]()
